Speakers: Lighting the city – Urban lighting in the service of the citizen
The first session of the Urban Lightscapes Symposium is concerned with “Lighting the city: Urban Lighting in the service of the citizen”.
Moderator: Giorgos Paisidis, Chairman at Hellenic Illumination Committee
Dr. -Ing. Georgios Paissidis was born in Athens in 1965. He graduated from the German School of Athens in 1983. He graduated from the School of Electrical Engineering of the Technical University of Berlin with specialization in Lighting Engineering in 1988. The same year he was honored with the second international Karl Miescher Award, which is awarded to young scientists with distinguished attainments in Advanced Colorimetry. In 1991 he completed his PhD in the Department of Architectural Technology of NTUA’s School of Architecture. From 1993 he is the CEO of STILVI Lighting Ltd. and the responsible designer for the company’s innovative lighting applications. In the terms of the EU he has performed research on light deflection with holographic films and on the documentation of bio-meteorological resources concerning the development of photo-therapeutic programs against Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD). In 2000 his Light Art work dedicated to the concept of Transparency was exhibited in the German Center of Architecture in Berlin. In 2004 his Light Art work dedicated to the manufacture of Sphere by Archimedes was exhibited in the 18 Englishmen Square of Heraklion on the occasion of the Football Olympic Games commencement. From 2003 to 2009 he taught Lighting Design to the Postgraduate Programs of Lighting Studies at the Architectural Schools of Wismar’s and Coburg’s Universities. In 2011 he taught in the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Studies Program “Archeology, City, Architecture” of the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication (Aegean University), School of Architecture (University of Patras) and Department of History and Archeology (University of Athens) on the subject of “Light Art – Monumental Lighting”. In 2010 he was elected President of the Professional Lighting Designers Association (PLDA). He is a Professional Member of the International Association of Lighting Designers. As President of the Hellenic Association Committee (HIC) he represents Greece at International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and participates in the writing team of the Technical Committee 21 of CIE working on a guide about “Urban Lighting Master Planning” that is expected to be published by the end of 2013.
